Palm trees that will grow in Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, South and Central Coast

There are a wide variety of palms that grow in Sydney’s temperate climate, with its warm summers, mild winters and rainfall spread throughout the year. The coastal suburbs are moderated by their location; the inland western suburbs have a more extreme temperature range. In winter, temperatures rarely drop below 5 °C, July being the coldest month, with an average range of 8.0–16.2 °

Here are some common palms that suit Sydney and surrounding coastal areas:

• Golden Cane
• Bismarkia
• Fishtail
• Triangle
• Mt Lewis Alexandra and the regular Alexandra.

The Bamboo Palm (chamaedorea seifrizii), Cascade and Golden Cane make good indoor and patio palms anywhere in Sydney as long as they are not exposed to the frost. Rhapis and Kentia palms also great as indoor plants and will tolerate some frost.

Palm trees that will do well in the Western Suburbs and inland Sydney are:

• These palms can tolerate extreme frosts,
• Chinese windmill (trachycarpus)
• European Fan (humilis)
• Wine (butia)
• These palms can tolerate moderate frosts,
• Ponytail
• Canary island date
• Dwarf date
• Cotton palm
• Bangalow
• Cocos
• Foxtail
• Rhapis
• Nicholai
• dypsis baronii (common name unclear, very similar to a Golden Cane)
• Majestic (will tolerate minor frosts)
• Kentia (will tolerate minor frosts)
• Bismarkia (will tolerate minor frosts)

There are many more harder to find species, palm nurseries tend not to stock, that could also be added to this list.
